Jacques Wels

Dr Jacques Wels is a quantitative sociologist. He received a PhD from the Université libre de Bruxelles (Belgium) in April 2016. He has worked for different institutions including the World Bank as a consultant and the University of Cambridge as an affiliated lecturer and is currently a Research Fellow at MRC Unit for Lifelong Health and Ageing at University College London (UCL). He made several scientific stays at King’s College London (2014-15), Waseda University (2018), the Japan Institute for Labour Policy and Training (2019) and Tokyo University (2020).

His work mainly focuses on the relationship between work, employment and social protection and population health with a specific interest for the atypical forms of employment and for the transitions to retirement. He also pays particular attention to the policies and factors that protect physical and mental health including employment policies and the role of trade unions.

His work has been published in many journals including Social Science & Medicine, Ageing and Society, and the European Journal of Public Health.
